The Vienna Guidelines

A „ONE-PLAN-APPROACH“ for Conservation Breeding Projects for Endangered Aquatic Species.

Habitat destruction, climate change and invasive species are the main challenges threatening the existence of rare animal species that live now in only a few limited areas.
Ex-situ conservation breeding projects in aquaria can make a sustainable contribution to species conservation if they are based on understandable and widely acceptable criteria.
For this purpose, a group of recognized experts from practice, science and associations developed the "Vienna Guidelines".
In a practical manner, they can be applied equally and cooperatively to species conservation projects by aquarists, zoos, scientific institutions and associations.
The "Vienna Guidelines" were developed independently of commercial interests.
